I’ve known dog whisperers, cat whisperers, even baby whisperers. I had yet to meet a horse whisperer until I met Lulu Bogolin the Executive Director of Equine Assisted Therapy. A true horse whisperer in every sense of the word, Lulu and I have been working on my fear of horses.

I’m here to say, that horse time at the Ranch has really helped me understand horses in a way that I couldn’t imagine.

We walk into the pasture and the horses immediately want to be in Lulu’s circle. They want to communicate with her, nuzzle with her and be around her. Each and every time I’ve had the opportunity to be with the Hero Herd, every horse has made sure they’ve gotten Lulu time.

When we chatted this time and recorded our StoryCorps interview, the horses were a big part of it. We sat in the pasture and talked about Lulu’s story, her hopes and dreams for the Ranch and yes, more herd behavior.

Did you know that simply be observing horses will show you herd behavior, including communicating with one another.

Yes, horses are big animals. 1500 pounds. And yet, Lulu calmly showed me how to walk with a horse, Walk On!, whoa a horse and how to groom a horse. All while demonstrating behavior that wasn’t sending mixed messages.

In addition, this last time we were with the herd, we practiced boundaries. She showed me how to gently keep my boundaries while respecting the horses boundaries. Equine Assisted Therapy Ranch holds a Hoedown for Hope every year. This year it’s Saturday September 28th.
